Redd Griffin led a half dozen literary enthusiasts last night in a discussion of the Hemingway story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.” On the other end of the library’s 2nd floor were twice that many writing enthusiasts in a round, or square, table workshop. These events are calendared at the library’s site, with many others, more than the average Oak Park or any other enthusiast can do justice to — witness last night’s cruel literary-writing conflict.

Griffin et al. are back at it in two weeks, on Thursday 3/15. The writers’ critique group is regularly scheduled, but not in the current list, which closes out at the end of the month. On the month’s list, the Sunday 2 pm movies stand out, plus art historian David Sokol’s treatment on Tuesday 3/6 of a deliciously esoteric subject which I was discussing just the other day with my friend Jake (not his real name), “American Artistic Training in 19th Century Germany: The Dusseldorf Experience.” The good part is, Sokol knows what he’s talking about, which is rare enough these days.
