Richard Ellis Akin, 67, a longtime Oak Park resident, died on March 12, 2013 at Rush University Medical Center. Born on Aug. 21, 1945 in Pueblo, Colo. to Ellis and Esther Akin, he was raised in Overland Park, Kan., where he graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School. He earned a B.S. degree from Principia College and also a Master of Commerce degree from the University of Illinois.
A 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he retired in 1973 after three years of service. Until his retirement in 2008, he was a senior vice-president at LaSalle National Bank/ABN AMRO.
He was an avid traveler, home chef, biker and skier, and was a member of the Lake Shore Ski Club. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Club and served on the Oak Park Public Library board and the First Church of Christ Scientist board.
Family and friends say he touched the lives of many. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor will not be forgotten. His stubborn determination and vitality served him well in a house full of daughters who loved, respected, and will miss him dearly.
Richard Akin is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Heather, Lili, and Andrea; his brothers, Ronald (Tanya) and Robert (Bobbie); his niece, Tanya; and his nephews, Wesley and Travis.
All services were private. In lieu of flowers, memorials to www.salvationarmyusa.org are appreciated.
