The Oak Park and River Forest High School boys basketball team almost made it through the Sectional of Death.
While it might be hyperbolic to describe the Proviso East Sectional of the Class 4A state playoffs to that degree, OPRF coach Matt Maloney called it the toughest sectional in the state. The sectional included powerhouse Public School teams Whitney Young, Curie and Kenwood along with traditionally successful teams like St. Joseph, St. Patrick, Riverside-Brookfield and St. Ignatius.
The Huskies fell one victory short of an Elite 8 berth as Whitney Young defeated OPRF 73-55 in the sectional final Friday, March 10. OPRF was vying for its first sectional championship since 1976.
OPRF senior Cameron Gross led OPRF with 14 points and junior guard Isaiah Fuller had 11 points. Jared Scott, who will play college football at Wyoming next season, contributed 10 points for the Huskies. Charlie Hoehne added nine points and four offensive rebounds.
