Adam Salzman for Oak Park village board

Opinion: Letters To The Editor

We are an Oak Park family with young children, and we support Adam Salzman for Village of Oak Park trustee. When our children were very small, several families in our neighborhood formed a tightly knit play group that feels more like a family. Adam, his wife Jill, and their kids Maggie and Roxy are an important part of that family.

Adam is a devoted dad who, along with Jill, is able to balance the care of his children (as well as looking out for all of our kids) with the management of his own law practice. He is committed to Oak Park and is a model for citizenship in action through his chairmanship of the Universal Access Commission. As village trustee, Adam will bring that level of balance and engagement to the development and strengthening of Oak Park.

When Adam told us he was planning to run for village trustee, he said that Oak Park is the right community to raise our kids in, and that he wants to be a part of ensuring that Oak Park continues to thrive for the whole community. We believe that Adam is the right person to be a village trustee because of his dedication to his family, his commitment to the community, and his determination to ensure that Oak Park remains the best place to raise our kids.

On April 5, we will vote for Adam Salzman, as well as his excellent running mates, Ray Johnson and Bob Tucker, for Oak Park village trustee, and we hope that you will, too!

I will not vote for ANY trustee candidate who is unwilling to take a position on the Madison Avenue Housing Proposal. If I have to, I will sign a ballot without checking a candidate name.

How will Mr. Salzman vote on the proposed low-income housing in the Comcast building? Specific positions are needed -- not just vague fiscal discipline platitudes. I will only be voting for those who oppose this boondoggle.

Just what Oak Park needs, someone who is a good family man and loves Oak Park and is able to tow the party line. Those qualifications do not make a good candidate. Salzman might be a good man, but that does not make him a good trustee. Oak Park does not need another attorney who can figure out how to circumvent the law and hide things in executive session.

The test of electability is not being a good father or the receipt of a strong endorsement from a running mate. The test is performance and a prime measure is ability to represent and communicate with the residents. Commissions are REQUIRED to submit and post minutes of every meeting. The commission chaired by Saltzman and Tucker published minutes for only 30% of their meetings. If elected officials don't follow their own rules, how can they provide open governance to the residents?

As Trustee liaison to the Universal Access Commission, I have watched Adam successfully lead the commission and accomplish public forums, meetings moved to where people with disabilities live such as at The Oakes and Mills Park Tower, and fully staff the commission. Likewise, as chair of the Community Design Commission, Bob Tucker has led with distinction and was invaluable in assisting with creating a cohesive Downtown Master Plan. Commission experience can lead to an experienced Trustee.

I consider it admirable that a person can juggle their career and their family. However, I find the fact that Mr. Salzman chooses to associate his name and political career with the likes of Ray Johnson and the VMA questionable.
