Oak Park police arrested a suspect, Feb. 7, whom they believe was responsible for an armed robbery at Charter One Bank moments before, according to a statement from police.
Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at 1:44 p.m., after witnesses said a man wearing sunglasses and a scarf covering his face came into the bank in the 800 block of South Oak Park Avenue. He reportedly displayed a handgun and ordered everyone on the ground. Witnesses said the man then jumped over the counter, removed an undisclosed amount of money from a cash drawer and fled in an unknown direction.
A description of the offender was broadcast and responding officers began to canvass the area. A man who matched the description given by witnesses was found hiding in a garbage dumpster not far from the scene.
The man was taken into custody at the scene and turned over to special agents from the Chicago Division Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He will likely be charged in U.S. District Court Wednesday morning, the statement said.
Tuesday's incident is the third robbery of this Charter One branch in the past four years. The branch was previously robbed twice within a six-month period, once on Dec. 3, 2008 and again on April 6, 2009.
