Kathleen A. Wiedow (nee Riley) died peacefully after a short but brave battle with cancer on Jan. 30, 2011. Raised in Oak Park, she attended Ascension School and Oak Park and River Forest High School. After graduating from Northern Illinois University, she returned home to marry William Wiedow, her high school sweetheart. While at NIU, she served as president of her sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha.

Mrs. Wiedow lived most of her life in Oak Park and in service to Oak Park, working at the Barrie Park Recreation Center and then teaching at Emerson Elementary School. After Emerson, she moved to Lincoln School and recently retired after more than 30 years. Generations of Oak Park students had a chance to experience her infectious smile, enthusiasm, and true love of learning.

She was also an active member of the Oak Park-River Forest Infant Welfare Society. A generous and entertaining hostess, she shared her beach homes in South Haven, Mich., and Naples, Fla., with family and friends. Her famous "beer-can chicken" and "ice cream sundae birthday cakes" will be long-remembered by many. Kathy's joy will be sorely missed.

Kathy Wiedow is survived by her husband of 39 years, Bill; her parents, Tom and Lorrain Riley; her siblings, Karen (Stu) Gipson, Tom (Sue) Riley, Patty (Jeff) Bowman, Suzen, and Margaret (Rob) McArdle; and the entire Wiedow family, which includes 25 nieces and nephews and eight great-nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass in celebration of her short but full life was celebrated at Ascension Church where Kathy was baptized, confirmed and married.
