Dr. Robert John Baldauf, 89, died on Feb. 12, 2012 at Oak Park Place in Madison. Born in Fond du Lac, WI on Feb. 10, 1923 to Edward John and Florence (Daleiden) Baldauf, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Robert received his Doctorate degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He worked as a clinical physiologist and was the interim superintendent of School District 97 in Oak Park.
As a former director of special education in District 97, Baldauf implemented a program in the early 1970s that gave elementary school students extra help with reading, said Lois Catrambone, a former D97 teacher and reading specialist for the program.
"He was really ahead of his time," Catrambone said, because Baldauf realized that not all children are ready to read at a certain age. The program provided opportunities for learning success that the students would not have otherwise had, she said.
And though Baldauf was a strong leader, he was always open to input from colleagues.
"You could share with him anything you wanted," Catrambone said.
He enjoyed and was an avid reader. Robert Baldauf is survived by his children, Jim Baldauf and Ellen (Dana) Lilly; sister, Mary Agnes Oakpal; grandchildren, Zachary, Michaelen, and Payton Baldauf, Janice, Jane, and Jeanne Lilly; and his great-grandchild, Christian Lilly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Jeanne Gedney, his parents, and his brother, Don Baldauf. Interment will take place this spring at the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Godfrey, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Rainbow Hospice of Jefferson, WI. Additional information at www.nitardyfuneralhome.com, 920-563-5898.
