Many Americans may not be aware of anything especially significant about Jan. 11. However, I am sure that most of them would be shocked to know that it marked the five-year anniversary of the arrival of the first detainees to Guantanamo Bay.

The vast majority of these detainees have been held for five years without charges or trials.

The Red Cross has condemned the conditions at Guantanamo Bay as amounting to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.

The U.S. government should shut down Guantanamo, and detainees should either be charged and given a fair trial, or released.

I sincerely hope that my fellow citizens of this country feel the same way.

Peace.
