The Village of Oak Park picked the wrong year to give up salt for Lent. This past Wednesday’s snowstorm produced the iciest driving I have seen in years! I have never seen ice this bad on Oak Park Avenue, which I consider a main street, not a side street. It is not so surprising to see Oak Park cutting back on salt during one of the worst snowstorms this year, especially if you can remember this past fall when our village peppered our dry streets with an abundance of salt on only the prediction of snow for the next morning! I thought this was ridiculous then, and now when we need the salt to prevent accidents for both pedestrians and cars, we have to limit the use of salt. I have been driving in Oak Park since I was 15 and have been conditioned to well plowed and salted streets. Let’s not stop now, for safety sake!
