Patricia Marie Thornton (nee Mooney), 87, a resident of Oak Park for over 60 years, died on Jan. 26, 2011.
A quiet, thoughtful woman who loved to read and enjoyed a good political discussion, she was never the life of the party, but presided over many. Growing up with just one sister, she ended up the matriarch of an extensive clan, numbering seven children, 27 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed theater and big-band-era music.
In the 1960s, she survived tuberculosis, which necessitated an extended stay in a sanitarium. Otherwise, for half a century, she governed life in the family home on Kenilworth. She was a resident of the Oak Park Arms retirement community at the time of her death. Her family is grateful to the Oak Park Arms and Rainbow Hospice for caring for her with dignity and respect.
Pat Thornton is survived by her children, Kevin (Mary Catherine), Mary Pat (Joseph) Collins, Susan (Peter) Wemple, Nancy, William (Madeline), Patrick (Heather), Brian (Abi), and John (Pamela); 27 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her sister, Marilyn (the late Kenneth) Trainor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack.
Visitation was held at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home on Jan. 28. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Jan. 29 at Ascension Church in Oak Park, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
