River Forest police have arrested a man for stealing a showering Dominican University student’s backpack.
Roy F. Schaffer, 42, a homeless man whose last address was on Chicago’s South Side, was taken into custody Wednesday morning at the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake Street in Oak Park.
In the original theft, a man's Nike backpack and its contents were stolen the evening of Dec. 2 as he showered in the men's locker room at Dominican University, 7900 Division Street in River Forest. The loss was estimated at $400.
River Forest Police Detective Sgt. Marty Grill said they tracked Schaffer down after he used one of the victim’s credit cards at a downtown Oak Park restaurant on Dec. 2. One of the restaurant’s employees later described Schaffer, and Grill said they found Schaffer at the Dominican library later that day, where they interviewed him.
The restaurant employee later picked Schaffer out of a photo spread.
Schaffer was charged with financial identity theft, a class 3 felony. Grill said financial identity theft is normally a class 4 felony, but Schaffer's charge was upgraded because of his criminal history. He has seven previous convictions for forgery, Grill said.
Schaffer is being held before his bond hearing Friday morning at 9 a.m.
