The Fenwick boys basketball team hasn't gotten off to a favorable start at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament currently taking place in Hillside.
The Friars (5-5) fell in the first two rounds, including a 62-47 loss to Wheaton Academy in the consolation round on Thursday. A tenuous Fenwick lead in the third quarter went to the wayside as Wheaton (10-2) jumped on a 7-0 run and led by six to start the final period. The Friars made just 10-of-20 shots from the free-throw line and were outrebounded 35-21.
Fenwick is scheduled to take on Manley on Saturday at Noon in the Proviso West fieldhouse.
The Friars opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 63-59 loss to the host Panthers. Luke Lattner's three-pointer put his team up 33-31 at halftime and the Friars swelled the advantage to six points early in the third quarter. But Proviso West refused to go away. The Panthers jumped on a 10-0 run, and it was Fenwick's turn to play catch up. The Friars knotted the score at 47-47 heading into the final period.
Costly fouls and turnovers plagued the Friars in the final minutes of the game. The Panthers' Taylor Watkins hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Scott Lindsey led Fenwick with 16 points, while Dan Dwyer added 11 points and nine rebounds. Lattner and Tom Planek chipped in 10 points apiece for Fenwick.
