Parking ticket a perfect early Christmas gift

As is our family custom, we went out for dinner this past Thursday night (the day before Christmas Eve) to give ourselves a little break before all of the holiday cooking. We parked in downtown Oak Park (on South Boulevard) at 5:35 pm. After entering the restaurant, I realized that we had failed to feed the meter for the last 25 minutes prior to 6 p.m. My wife thought she had heard that parking was free the last few days before the holidays, in order to encourage shopping. Of course, it turned out to be a $20 mistake, as we received a parking ticket at 5:53 p.m. (seven minutes before parking was free)!

I am amazed at such efficiency for a government with such financial problems. Bah humbug to you, Tom Barwin.

One needs to pay attention to the parking signs in Oak Park, or Chicago or wherever you are or you run the risk of getting a ticket. If you overstay your meter or beyond the posted time then you can not be surprised to find a ticket on your windshield. My concern with OP parking issues is the confusion generated by many of the signs which need to be more clearly and understandably written. I avoid much of the signage in areas along North and South Boulevard read like a complex contract.

Oak Park gets NONE of my shopping money because of their draconian parking regulations. I got ticketed outside the house for which I pay 15k in property taxes (and no, I don't buy a city sticker, nor will I because of this grotesque tax bill). I was inside for 10 minutes and got a ticket. I'm now playing hide the car forever and ever, which means no shopping in downtown Oak Park.

This happened to us when we were dining in the Harrison Arts district one evening -- spent $200 on a wonderful meal, then got ticketed for being parked on Harrison St. after 10 p.m. Have not been back and won't return. Hey OP leaders: GET A CLUE! I would love to support local business but refuse to abide the parking nonsense. Meanwhile, shopped for Xmas presents in Forest Park where the parking meters were "on holiday"--exactly the incentive I needed. (Spent at least $500 on gifts)
