Better citizen oversight of police needed

Another police scandal! It's no wonder, is it? We have a police chief who had a scandal involving a dispatcher, putting the lives of our citizens in danger. For his misstep, he gets a slap on the hand. Another cop shakes down West Side businesses. Policeman Prissmeyer makes racist comments. Another cop does something for which he is suspended, the most recent report. Another cop pulls a gun and threatens to kill a woman's dog if the dog gets off the leash. We have about 100 cops. By my figuring, at least 5-10 percent of them are no good. What we need in this town is a citizens' oversight group. When a cop goes bad, and apparently we have a lot of bad cops, their crimes are published on the crime page of the local papers, just like everybody else's. Then they are fired. We can start with the police chief whose immorality has set an example to the rest of his force. "Hey, if he can get away with it, so can I." His buddy, the village manager, is finally getting out, so the village trustees can do the right thing.
