The Trinity basketball team defeated two teams in one day to win the Naperville Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday.

The Blazers (6-0) edged Naperville Central 59-58 behind Monica Albano’s 24 points. Shakyia Vassar added 12 points and Megan Podkowa chipped in seven. Grace Sanchez pounded the boards for 13 rebounds.

Earlier in the day, Trinity clobbered Bartlett 74-62. Albano scored 25 points and Vassar 20 in the win. Nicole Hazemi finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers.

OPRF looking for consistency

The OPRF girls basketball team’s record dropped to 2-4 with a 54-45 loss to Joliet at the Naperville Central Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday. The Huskies fell despite 16 points from Casey Blaha.

On Friday, OPRF took a 28-8 lead by halftime en route to a 56-30 win over Oak Forest. Brittany Smith led the Huskies with 15 points, while Stekera Hall added 11 and Gabby Cole 10.

Smith also led OPRF in a 61-44 loss to area-rival Trinity earlier in the week. Smith finished with 16 points in the Huskies’ second straight loss to the Blazers.

“To quote my favorite musician Michael McDermott, we’re ‘perfectly imperfect,'” said OPRF head coach Bob Biggins of his team. “We’ve gotten good support performances off the bench from Alex Chapman, Shelby Cozette and Jen McAdam. It seems we need a little more time to get some cohesion between our starters and executing what we want to do. I have had no problems with our efforts and feel our shots and offense will begin to click.”

The Huskies host Lyons Township on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).

No title for Friars this season

There wasn’t much celebrating going on for the Fenwick girls basketball team at the Niles North Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday. At least, not as much as there has been in past years.

For the first time in six seasons, the Friars did not go home with the tournament trophy. Falling to Wheeling (6-0) in a high-scoring 82-72 game, Fenwick (4-1) was forced to settle for runner-up.

Fenwick’s top juniors Katlyn Payne and Tricia Liston racked up a total of 48 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Wheeling’s Janelle Cannon (25 points), Bianca Szafarowicz (21 points) and Ashley Wilson (20 points).

The team hosts Bishop McNamara on Dec. 4 (7 p.m.) to kick-off East Suburban Catholic Conference action. Fenwick is vying for its 15th-straight conference title this season.
