Social security card lost in robbery

A victim told police two unknown men approached him around 1:30 a.m., Dec. 13, in the 600 block of Harrison Street. As they approached from behind, one struck the victim, who dropped a social security card. The men snatched the card and fled in an unknown direction.  

Burglaries

Someone crept inside the unlocked rear door of a house in the 300 block of North Lombard Avenue between 6:30 and 7 p.m., Dec. 9, and removed a brown purse from a kitchen chair. Estimated loss was $350.

Sometime around midnight, Dec. 11, someone broke into a photography studio in the 200 block of South Marion Street, using bolt cutters to break out and pry open an elevated first-floor bathroom window. The would-be burglar left without removing anything immediately noticeable.

A burglar was stopped around 12:30 p.m., Dec. 11, by a witness who saw him using a crowbar to pry open the rear door of a first-floor apartment in the 1400 block of North Harlem Avenue. The man fled toward the alley after the witness yelled at him. Estimated damage to the house was $800. 

Police stopped a 23-year old Berwyn man in the 700 block of South Ridgeland Avenue for skulking around suspiciously at 1 a.m., Dec. 12, in an area of town that has suffered a rash of burglaries. He was found to have two active traffic warrants from Oak Park and Lyons and was released on bond.

Someone kicked open the front door of a house in the 700 block of Carpenter. Once inside, the offender ransacked the interior. Victims said they could find nothing missing. Damage to the door frame is estimated at $600.

‘Tis the season for package thefts

Two Google Android computer tablets in a Fed Ex package were stolen from the porch of a residence in the 700 block of North Austin Boulevard, the afternoon of Dec. 9. Estimated loss was $114.

Someone stole a package from the common lobby area of a building in the 200 block of South Maple Avenue, plus a package containing books on tape and hand-crocheted hot pads. Estimated loss is $60.  

Someone lifted a package containing a Krups coffeemaker and boots from the common area of a building in the 100 block of South Maple Avenue, Dec. 13. Loss was $117.28.

Two packages were removed from the front stairs of a house in the 500 block of South Grove Avenue on Dec. 9 between 1 and 2:30 p.m.

License plates removed 

A front license plate was pried off a 2007 Volvo parked in the 900 block of North East Avenue sometime between Nov. 9 and 14. The crime was reported in December. Estimated loss was $10. 

Dec. 13, a license plate disappeared from a parked Mazda in the 800 block of West Erie Street. Another plate came off the rear of a Nissan Juke parked in the 800 block of Eire Street, overnight Dec. 13-14.

An unlocked Electra/Tiki girl’s beach cruiser bike with pink flowers and pink fenders disappeared from the backyard of a house in the 1000 block of South Euclid Avenue sometime between Nov. 30 and Dec. 7. Loss was estimated at $250.

A 54-year-old Chicago man was nabbed allegedly shoplifting at the Deals Dollar Store in the 6400 block of North Avenue around 3:15 p.m., Dec. 13. He was taken into custody, processed and released on bond.

School pot bust

Around 11 a.m., Dec.9, a female student at Percy Julian Middle School in the 400 block of South Ridgeland Avenue, was fond in possession of cannabis and arrested by Oak Park police. She was turned over to the custody of her mother.  

Garage burglaries

Someone entered an unlocked garage in the 500 block of South Ridgeland Avenue, Dec. 7-8, and used a gardening shovel to smash the windows of the locked cars within, steal cash from a Nissan and scratch a Toyota RAV4. Estimated loss was $810.

Sometime overnight, Dec. 8-9, a landscaping brick hurled through the window allowed someone to enter a garage in the 1200 block of North Ridgeland Avenue and remove a 21-speed bicycle. Loss was estimated at $900.

A garage in the 1200 block of North East Avenue was entered via a broken window during the day, Dec. 9. Two bikes were stolen, valued at $900.

Someone kicked in the lower panel of a side service door to gain entrance to a garage in the 1200 block of Belleforte during the day, Dec. 10. Once inside, a specialized men’s mountain bike was removed. Loss was estimated at $500.

Someone walked into an open garage, the afternoon of Dec. 14 in the 700 block of South Taylor, and removed a specialized “hard rock” bicycle. Loss was estimated at $250.

Vandalism

Overnight Dec. 9, a front driver’s-side tire was slashed on a Volkswagen Golf, parked in the garage vestibule of a house in the 700 block of South Taylor Avenue. Damage was estimated at $300.

Between noon and 8:30 p.m., Dec. 10, someone damaged a parked car in the 400 block of Lake Street with three small projectiles, shattering the driver’s side rear window and denting the driver’s side rear door. Loss was estimated $150.

A silver 2013 Mazda was vandalized while parked overnight, Dec. 11-13, in the 500 block of Scoville Avenue. Vandals etched two 3-foot scratches in the sides.

These items, obtained from the Oak Park and River Forest police departments, came from reports filed Dec. 8-14 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.
