Oak Park police have developed significant leads during their search for a man in his mid-20s who reportedly sexually assaulted a 49-year-old woman last week in the 200 block of North Oak Park Avenue.

The woman was walking to her car shortly before 7 p.m. Dec. 7 when the offender pushed her to the ground in the rear gangway stairwell off the alley, said Oak Park Police Commander LaDon Reynolds. He placed his left hand over her mouth, reached under her skirt with his right hand and grabbed her, according to a police report.

The woman bit the offender's hand and began to kick and scream. The offender fled towards Oak Park Avenue and then eastbound on Ontario Street, the report said.

Reynolds said police are following up on the leads. Police do not believe at this point the attack is related to a string of robberies in April where women were grabbed around the neck in the same area of the village.

VA, you say you dont care what I think and do, then don't read my comments...easier said than done, I know, but that's my suggestion. Or, as you were, complaining and spouting off.

Phil, this may come as a shock to you, but what YOU come here for is not necessarily what others do. I am always interested in knowing as much info as possible IF the perp is on the loose. Has nothing to do with confirming biases, but whatever's clever...As for the news aspect, I like how WJ has news, fluff and opinions combined. And I don't buy that passive mentality of "go somewhere else." NO! If WJ claims to provide news, then don't do it half-assed, due to some misguided PC notion.

Has anyone noticed that this doesn't appear on the village website police statistics. No wonder Oak Park has seen a 30% reduction in crime this year.

I advised people unhappy with the "news" at a "news" site to shop elsewhere. I certainly do. I come here to see what the local goofs with chips on their shoulders are spouting off about. And, I don't think people really cared about getting a description of the rapist as much as having their biases confirmed.

@Phil: Given your first piece of "advice" (don't bitch about a NEWS site not reporting NEWS), it doesn't surprise me a bit that you went there, regarding race. Totally, completely and utterly neglecting any concerns about not knowing general description of a sex perp...Wow, just wow...

For all the complainers about the lateness / incompleteness of the report, get your news elsewhere. Vote with your feet (or keyboard). And all the people crying about the race omission, don't tell me that you didnt already assume the perp was black. I bet when the race was disclosed, you felt so much better about your ingrained bias. Blacks=criminals and muslim=terrorist.

Three cheers for the woman for biting and screaming.

Rear gangway stairwells are notoriously favored by creeps. Was that the woman's only route alternative?

I don't think of the Wednesday Journal as a real source of news reporting. It's more a part-time feel good job for some locals. Reporting unsavory events isn't going to fill that bill. I do enjoy the lively converstations from the locals until it gets interesting and they are shut down by The Great and Powerful Oz or whoever is treading the right to free speech.

A panhandler did it, They get blamed for everthing that goes on in this town. Maybe if the Beat cop was not in Boston Market for 2 hours having lunch this would not of happen!

Crime is everywhere. Oak park isnt that safe.We just have to make sure we know our surrounding. Stop leaving your windows open showing off your 70inch TV. Leaving your garage door open with the $800.00 snow blower in it unattended. These people are watching you. They come from all over to take your stuff. I truly feel sorry for the lady that was assaulted no one never ask for it. We Just have to keep our eyes open at all times.

Legalize concealed carry in Illinois.

Jon Marcus, I said it was from the "suntimes" didn't I? Anyone with half a brain could easily look it up (as you did), it's not that hard. I've nothing against "PC", but I do against the delusional distortion of what "PC" is. How you found my comment to be a "rant" I have no idea, especially considering taking it upon yourself to "rant" about anyone who questions the WJ. I see that you see no problem with news ignoring important facts.

Elizabeth: Even if we had all those descriptors, in addition to the color of his jacket and pants, it would still fall in the category of 'vague' but if there have been similar attacks and descriptions, and if the crimes are occurring in a particular area, it might point to someone who lives in that area! And knowing race (which should include complexion), as well as height, age and general weight tells us who it's NOT. If the cops are cruising around and see some dude in a hoodie in that area..

I heard about this on Sat. from a woman who lives in the building. Why is the Journal just sending out this email now?!

elizabeth from oak park

Race doesn't really help to identify the perpetrator either. And while height and weight narrow things down somewhat, crime victims often remember their attackers as being much taller and heftier than they were. It's certainly useful to let us know that this guy is out there, but absent a very detailed description that includes a very distinctive physical characteristic, not sure how much good it does to include vague descriptors such as race, height and weight.

What is up is that WJ obviously feels some sort of moral obligation to prevent a segment of the population from being depicted as the perpetrators of most of the crime, whether or not it is accurate. I know full well that this is a poverty thing. We are sandwiched between Austin and Maywood and I understand that if we were in an area bookended by predominantly poor White 'hoods that we'd see similar incidents.

LiquidEvil

Posted: December 12th, 2011 4:17 PM

Well, in that case, what's up with the crappy reporting?

Violet Aura

Posted: December 12th, 2011 4:10 PM

@Former OPer: Epic fail in your statement about description! First of all, the Pioneer Local report listed not only his race (BLACK), but weight (210 lbs.), age (25) and height (6'3"). The sin of omission is glaringly obvious. We've switched band leaders (new WJ staff reporter) but are singing the same old song. Maybe WJ should employ Black women without this silly White liberal guilt so we can get the whole poop.

I live in Oak Park, subscribe to WJ online news bulletins. Why am I only hearing about this on Dec. 12 at 4 PM? The rare bird sighting was given a ridiculous amount of coverage. What's up, WJ?

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

The point of the matter is simple. The facts are disseminated by the police and then the WJ INTENTIONALLY omits and edits them. I am assuming that those marching orders come from the top, Editor Dan Haley. I would just like an answer as to why. This story was reported by the Oak Leaves with all the facts intact the next day. This was not a bike being stolen, but a sexual assualt in the heart of Oak Park at 7:00 p.m. when many woman are still coming home from work.

Jon Marcus

OPer, the SunTimes did get that info, and you read it. So why didn't you share it instead of your rant against PC? Seems like you're as bad as the WJ. Description: male, black, 25, black hair, 6'3, 210 lbs. He wore a burgundy or dark colored jacket, possibly baseball style with leather sleeves, navy or dark hoodies underneath, blue jeans and dark gym shoes.

If u described his race, would u be that much closer 2 knowing how the perp looked? Kelly frm Oak Park said sarcastically "Guess I'll be on the lookout for every single 20-something male who I see on the street" If u knew the perp was black, it wouldn't make it easier. You'd be on the lookout for every black 20something out there. And there are a whole lotta law abiding black 20somethings in Oak Park. You need more to go on than just race. Seems to be an obsession with the folks who comment here

i respect people of all races but if a disproportionate number of crimes are by blacks or any other group we have to find out why and correct it. What causes crime? What can be done to stop it? just calling everyone a racist wont help!!!!

OPer

LiquidEvil, The suntimes site managed to get a description of the thug, and their article came also out sooner. Maybe there's a limit for how many descriptions of criminals who happen to be black oakpark.com allow themselves to include before they feel they're being un-PC? A description, and a good one, is important... not just color, but other distinctive attributes that would help lead to an arrest. How are the public suppose to help inform police if they have no idea what the thug looks like?

Former Oak Parker

Posted: December 12th, 2011 3:01 PM

Would knowing the person's race help identify the perp? Obviously not. A full description would include the person's physical charateristics, including race, which might, in fact, be helpful. Just stating the person's race serves no purpose.

LiquidEvil

Posted: December 12th, 2011 3:00 PM

Geez people, maybe the police didn't release or don't have a description. Since the front page of this site CLEARLY shows a police sketch of a black robbery suspect, I don't think this is some PC conspiracy.

Detailed reports from the paper might be helpful!

Posted: December 12th, 2011 2:57 PM

Are we really so PC we can no longer give a description and read a full detailed report?! (aka - the news!!)

Paddy Boy

Posted: December 12th, 2011 2:52 PM

Gianni - please drop the race issue. That isn't what this about. However, Paddy Boy is deeply offended that anyone would dare commit a crime on the same block as the Irish Store. I will not rest until this bloke is captured and punished

Kelly from Oak Park

Posted: December 12th, 2011 2:52 PM

And NO description whatsoever...that's really helpful. I'm there often. Guess I'll be on the lookout for every single 20 something male who I see on the street. Thanks OakPark.com! So helpful these almost-a-week-old-stories where you don't bother describing the criminal at all.
