I am writing to inform the Oak Park and River Forest community of an important civic event, one of which most citizens are probably unaware.
On Sept. 12, I attended the first lecture in a series of lectures sponsored by the Oak Park and River Forest High School Debate Team. The lectures are all centered around the theme of civil liberties, which is also the debate topic for the 2005-2006 season.
The lecturer was Bernadine Dohrn, professor of law at Northwestern University, and former member of the 1960s radical political group, the Weather Underground.
She gave an enlightening talk on the subject of torture to an audience comprised mostly of students and parents. There was no press presence besides a representative of the school newspaper.
It is unfortunate that there was less coverage of this event because in an open and lively political climate such as that of Oak Park, I'm sure the lecture would have been of interest to many people.
