The goal for the Fenwick swim team this year was to have as many swimmers competing at the IHSA State Meet. The Friars accomplished their goal and then some as they capped off a successful season by finishing 21st as a team at the State Meet at Evanston High School last Friday and Saturday. Fenwick had two swimmers and a relay squad finish strong in the finals.

A year ago at State, Danielle Buglio finished 12th in the 100-backstroke. The senior climbed to sixth this year, timing out at :59.90 in the finals.

"Danielle's effort was a great improvement from last year," said Fenwick head coach Renee Miller. "She put in the work all season long and it ultimately paid off."

Liz Bell scored Fenwick's other top time with a :24.22 in the 50-yard freestyle, good for fifth place.

Both Bell and Buglio were part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Alison Pavlik and Meghan Barron that finished 11th overall in the finals with a time of 1:38.50. The time set a Fenwick team record.

"The fact that we now are swimming in the finals at the State Meet is a big accomplishment," said Miller, who has coached the team for the last six years. "We wanted to have an exciting weekend, and we did."

The Friars lose both Buglio and Bell to graduation this year, but Miller said she's not worried about a State drought.

"We had a lot of young girls swimming at State this year [in the prelims], getting the experience they need for the future," she said. "It's always tough to lose your two top swimmers, but I think we'll still be competitive next year."

Naperville Central won State by placing first in four events.

No Saturday swims for OPRF

While Oak Park and River Forest didn't qualify a swimmer for Saturday's finals, the team had some favorable times in the preliminaries on Friday.

The Huskies' 200-yard medley relay team of Lauren Daggett, Megan Rigali, Erika Rosenwinkel, and Jessica Rigas finished 23rd in 1:53.90.

Emily Japlon, Rigas, Mia Zinni, and Rosenwinkel swam to 25th place in the 400-yard freestyle (3:42.84.).

Rosenwinkel also finished 43rd in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of :25.26.
