Barbara Rank, 74, Former resident of Oak Park, Spanish teacher

Barbara Ann Emmick Rank, formerly of Oak Park, died in Vinaros, Spain, on Oct. 16, 2011. She was born in 1937 and, after graduating (magna cum laude) from Hope College in 1960 and doing graduate work in Spanish at the University of Wisconsin, she and her husband spent a year in Madrid, Spain as Fulbright Scholars. Subsequently, she helped coordinate the undergraduate program at the University of Illinois at Chicago and taught Spanish briefly at Notre Dame University. She and her husband retired to Dallas in 2001, to be near their daughter, Sarah, and her family.

Her neighbors and many friends on three continents say she will be greatly missed.

Barbara Rank is survived by her husband, Jerry Rank, currently of Dallas, Texas; her daughters Catherine Rank (Enrique) de Batiste-Redo and Sarah (David) Maynard; her grandchildren Enrique, Mark and Angela and Jessica, Allyson, Kelly and Ashlee; and her sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and John Emmick.

i had the pleasure of being her student at uic in the 80s...pleasant person and taught very well..she liked what she did a lot saludos para siempre! bg
