New Spirit Church is a family, warts and all

The time I came to Rev. Mickelson and New Spirit Church was the darkest period of my life. My son's partner was in the last stages of AIDS. He was in and out of consciousness, and when awake, he asked to find a priest or minister to have a holy union with my son, Andrew.

We found Rev. Mickelson at 9 in the evening. He arrived with his assistant, Carol Anne Kyras. A union ceremony was performed, including a song by Carol Anne, "There's a Place for Us."

My son-in-law lived another 2 years. Our family considered the union's byproduct a miracle. The love and support of this church has given our family a light and comfort that we have needed to survive the losses we have experienced.

A church houses a family?#34;parishioners and pastors. We are not perfect. We are human, warts and all. What keeps us together is our faith that tells us, "Gather together and your God will be with you."
