My grandmother's brother, Louis "Bobby" Machovec, was a ball turret gunner in the 94th Bomb Group. His crew perished in the North Sea on March 23, 1944 when their pilot, 2nd Lt. Fletcher Johnson, was forced to ditch their crippled B17. A rescue boat sent to save them exploded (probably from hitting a mine) enroute. When I located the families of the other crew members, the pilot's niece shared her uncle's diary. George Kacsuta was mentioned in it, leading me to search for and eventually find him.

Thanks for publishing this story [Coming home in one piece, Viewpoints, Nov. 8].
