Maria Vittoria Orfei, M.D., 88, River Forest resident, doctor, linguist, world-traveler

Maria Vittoria Orfei, M.D., 88, long-time resident of River Forest died on September 28, 2011 at Loyola Medical Center. She was born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy on March 17, 1923 to Francesco and Amalia Bonelli. She graduated from the Universita di Roma with a Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia in 1950.

Dr. Orfei began her career in medicine at Mother Cabrini Hospital in Chicago and also worked at West Suburban, Elgin State Hospital and Madden Mental Health Center until her retirement in 1980. She then volunteered at the Loyola University sexual dysfunction clinic for 14 years.

Dr. Orfei was an avid reader and also enjoyed playing bridge and Sudoku. She loved to travel and made yearly trips to Rome and Paris. She spoke many languages, English, Italian, French, and Spanish in addition to Greek and Latin. Maria Vittoria Orfie is survived by her daughters, Pierangela (Patrick) Murphy and Alexandra Orfei; grandchildren, Victoria Margaret, Julia Anne, and Patrick Aidan Murphy; siblings, Vincenzo (Maria) Bonelli and Luisella (Gianni) Tomassini. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Paola Bonelli and Nora (the late Fernando) Bruni.

A visitation and funeral mass were held October 1, at St. Luke Church in River Forest with interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials to Loyola University Medical Center, 2160 S. 1st Ave., Maywood, IL 60153 are appreciated. Arrangements were handled by Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home in Oak Park.
