Change students' lives: Tutor

A recent article in the Chicago Tribune included the information that over 50 percent of the students entering ninth grade in the Chicago Public School system do not graduate four years later. A 54-percent high school drop-out rate is a very disturbing statistic in the 21st century.

If you have 90 minutes a week, you can make a difference. Cluster Tutoring is a 15-year-old tutoring program that tutors kids from the Austin community. Many of the tutors such as myself have been involved with the program for several years and find they get as much out of the program as the kids. The atmosphere is supportive, friendly, and relaxed.

Currently, there is a substantial waiting list of students who need tutors. Tutoring is offered either on Tuesday or Thursday evenings during the school year between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The Tuesday night program takes place at the Pine Avenue Church at Augusta and Pine in Chicago. The Thursday night program is located in Oak Park at First United Church on Lake Street.

For more information about tutoring, please call Kathryn McCabe, director, at 773/378-5530.
