Howard Lewis Mayhew, 80, who lived in Oak Park for 47 years, died on Oct. 25, 2013 at Elmhurst Hospital. Born on Sept. 30, 1933 in Murphysboro to the late Harry and Vera Mayhew, he was raised in Havana, Illinois and graduated from Havana High School.
From 1952 to 1956, he served with the U.S. Navy and attended guided missile school in California. He retired from the Suburban Cook County Tuberculosis District in Forest Park and previously worked for Beckman Electronics. Some of his favorite pastimes included bowling, hiking, and camping.
Howard Mayhew is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marie; children, Deborah Kukielski, Darlene Sciaccotta and Carl Mayhew; and his grandchildren, Rachel, Holly, Jamie, Heather, Jason, Stephanie, David, Zachary and Ashley. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home at 203 S. Marion St. in Oak Park. Interment services with military honors will follow at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.
