Perhaps it was tempting if not understandable for the Oak Parkand River Forest H.S. football team to look a bit past overmatched Morton in anticipation of Saturday night's IHSA release of the playoff seeds and matchups. Instead, the Huskies took care of the business at hand (as OPRF has done all season) by jumping host Morton early en route to a 41-6 win Friday at Hoffman Stadium in Berwyn.

The Huskies scored four first-quarter touchdowns to seize a commanding 28-0 lead and never looked back in defeating the Mustangs for their final postseason tune-up opportunity.

OPRF senior running back Jamal Baggett opened the scoring barrage on an 8-yard run at 6:43 of the first quarter. Junior quarterback Lloyd Yates connected with wide receiver Jeremy Moore on a 49-yard touchdown pass play to extend the Huskies' lead to 14-0 with 4:19 left in the opening quarter. Baggett added a 14-yard touchdown scamper and Yates threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Purdue-bound wide receiver Simmie Cobbs to close out the first-quarter scoring.

With an impressive arsenal of wide receivers at his disposal, the efficient Yates (6-for-9, 201 yards passing, three touchdowns) opted for a 57-yard touchdown pass to senior Kejuan Ratcliff at the 10:39 mark of the second quarter to give OPRF a 35-0 advantage.

A running clock kicked in at 3:53 remaining in the third quarter when reserve quarterback Jake Lintvelt tossed a 66-yard pass to sophomore running back Antonio Cannon, making the score 41-0. Cannon led OPRF in rushing with 57 yards on seven carries, while Baggett rushed five times for 30 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Mustangs finally found the scoreboard on a 2-yard touchdown run with 8:10 remaining in the game. Kenneth Brown (four tackles, interception), Mike Moran (three tackles, interception), Andre Lee (four tackles) and Colin Boie (four tackles) led OPRF defensively, which limited Morton to just 224 yards of total offense on 62 plays for a paltry 3.6 yards per play. Conversely, the Huskies racked up 399 yards of offense on 39 plays (10.2 yards per play)

OPRF finished the regular season with a glittering 8-1 overall record, including an impressive 5-1 mark in the highly regarded West Suburban Silver. The Huskies' lone loss this season was a 20-14 setback to defending Class 7A state champion Glenbard West.

The Huskies will watch the IHSA playoff pairings show Saturday night to see their placement in the Class 8A bracket.

I ride my recumbent bicycle to the games. And will the beer be Fair-Trade?

Dan & Done...since this is Oak Park, we shouldn't be driving to the stadium when it is at most 1.5 miles from anywhere in the village. Ride your bike, walk, take a bus or park your Prius on top of the green garage on North Blvd. Let those from Dundee park on the streets & ticket them unmercifully. That will reduce our property taxes. And again, let's have a block party on 100 N Linden...with beer.

Dan - sorry to hear you got a ticket for an event scheduled for a Friday night. How idiotic to hand out parking tickets.

Congrats to the Huskies. Warning to anyone going to the game: be careful of OP's ban on street parking in the stadium neighborhood on Friday nights. I and several others received tickets a couple of weeks ago. The lame signs are on the posts, but they are less official and notable than a kid's lost dog flyer. I felt victimized by our esteemed police. Who else besides - maybe ENRON, reduces supply when demand is highest?

Why not close off the 100 block of N Linden Ave for a street fair/block party, complete with beer truck and live music? It's the playoffs!!

Kids and families are busy Saturdays. That is why Friday night football is such a great event. Fun for everyone!

I too am glad to see the game is Friday instead of Saturday. Not sure why Friday draws so much better. Looking forward to OP taking care of business to setup a great showdown with Maine South.

Nice to see that OP got a Friday night game (should be a nice 2-hour bus ride in rush-hour traffic for Dundee :-) ). Last year, the most sparsely attended game was the Saturday afternoon playoff game OP got to host. Saturday's just don't draw as well...good to see that they'll have the FULL home field advantage. Looking forward to your happy recap Saturday morning Marty.

Yep, Todd you're right. Thanks for the clarification. I misjudged the seedings. Regardless, the Huskies still earned a fairly high seed and it will be interesting to see how they fare. Knowing coach Hoerster and his modus operandi,I'm sure all the matters now is Dundee-Crown.

"A No. 1 Seed is virtually assured for OPRF..." Actually, a 4 seed was virtually assured based on the formula IHSA uses to determine playoff seedings. For one, there were already two 9-0 teams in 8A. Second, the IHSA uses opponent win totals to break ties. Unfortunately 3 of OP's opponents had a total of 3 wins among them (Fenger, Morton, and Proviso West). But this team played great all season and is a play from being 9-0. Let's support them this weekend!!

And the OPRF SOPHOMORE team finished the season undefeated (9-0) by beating Morton 61-13.
