Driving down Roosevelt Road in Berwyn on the edge of Oak Park may cause some passerbys uneasiness this weekend when the sun goes down.

Halloween-lovers in the area may be less wary; however, as locals have begun to recognize the eerie site of zombies strolling down the corridor as part of an annual event hosted by the Roosevelt Road Business Association and the local shop Horrorbles.

For the third year, anyone wanting a gruesomely fun night is invited to join in the Roosevelt Road Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl that kicks off at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 27, at 12th Street Rag, 6943 W. Roosevelt Road. The crawl will continue to Commodore Barry Post, Friendly Tap and FitzGerald's, which will be the site of the catered after party with films and other activities.

Zombies can create their own getups or can head to Horrorbles, which will sponsor makeup and costume staging from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at its shop, 6729 Roosevelt Road.

Those at all interested in Halloween-themed actives, especially those who haven't been part of the event before, are encouraged to join.

"It's pretty popular," said John Aranza, owner of Horrorbles, who is better known by his customers as "monster man." "It's really neat seeing families out on the corners watching the parade [of zombies] go by. It's really nice to see attention and appreciation grow."

Horrorbles is a unique shop on Roosevelt Road that caters to sci-fi and horror film fanatics, featuring classic movies titles, poster, figurines, books, apparel and other collectables to serve those who share Aranza's passion.

Aranza recognized Roosevelt Road was once a dormant area, and because of its new growth, the Zombie Crawl is important to showcase the local businesses. Construction along Roosevelt the first year of the crawl made for an interesting site as zombies had the chance to climb over mounds of dirt.

"It's fun watching people trying to figure out what is going on," Aranza said. "It's great to do events like this. It's really evolved."

Last year's event brought in some 300 participants, and he expects at least that many this weekend. Those wanting to join can show up the day of at Horrorbles to sign up. The cost is $15 and includes admission, makeup and food at the after party. Drink specials are featured at each bar. Proceeds from the event benefit West Suburban PADS.
