Village trustees covered a lot of ground at their weekly board meeting, advancing projects for new town houses and updating residents on the 21-story, mixed-use development at Lake and Forest.

Trustees also approved a resolution calling on Congress to stop the overuse of antibiotics in factory farms.

Town house project

Following months of planning, designing and redesigning the project, the village board approved a proposal to build 22 town houses at a YMCA-owned parking lot on an off-street site bounded by Randolph Street, Wisconsin Avenue, Washington Boulevard and Home Avenue.

The proposal, by development group JCSD LLC, also includes 44 parking spaces for townhouse residents and 24 private parking spaces for the YMCA, which is located at Randolph and Marion streets.

Lake and Forest high-rise

Jill Velan, director of parking and mobility services, noted that demolition is underway at the 21-story, mixed-use apartment building planned for the corner of Lake and Forest.

She said foundations for the structure are expected be laid, starting in November, and that the project developer is planning a community meeting in the next few weeks to answer questions from residents concerning the work schedule timeline and work crew traffic, among other topics.

Velan said information about the meeting and the project will be posted on the village’s project website at http://www.oak-park.us/projects.

Antibiotics Resolution

Trustees approved a resolution calling on Congress to approve the Protection of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act.

The resolution notes that antibiotics are frequently fed to livestock to promote growth and disease prevention to “compensate for crowded, unsanitary conditions, in a practice known as ‘nontherapeutic use,’ creating ideal conditions for the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”

The practice has led to the cultivation and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that have infected millions of Americans, according to the resolution, which calls for a statewide and national ban on nontherapeutic uses of antibiotics in livestock production.
