Rose Sugden, 97, award-winning educator

Rose Sugden, 97, died peacefully at West Suburban Hospital on Sept. 26, 2012. Upon her retirement from teaching in 1980, she worked tirelessly for the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association and its scholarship fund.

Always passionate about bridge, she became so proficient that she taught the refinements of the game. In 2006, Rose was inducted to the Hall of Fame of the College of Education at Illinois State University. She was also the retired director of Personnel and Curriculum for Bellwood's School District 88.

Among the many awards and achievements she received were the National Award for Junior High Schools, Best Economics Curriculum by the Twentieth Century Foundation, and the Candle of Knowledge Award from the Cook County Regional Office of Education. She has a scholarship established in her name through the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association.

Rose Sugden is survived by her son, David. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Sugden, who was superintendent of the River Forest Public Schools for 25 years.

At her request, there will not be a service or memorial. However, contributions in Rose's memory may be directed to the Nineteenth Century's Scholarship Fund, 178 Forest Ave., Oak Park, IL 60301.
