OakPark.com has debuted a mobile enhanced version of our website to make it easier for readers who access the site on mobile devices – iPhones, smartphones and tablets.
As we've watched the percentage of our traffic coming from mobile sources grow over the past year, we've known we are throwing readers a lot of news and a lot of visual elements on a pretty small screen. This new version of the site – by far the leading local news website – gets the key content to readers in a much simpler presentation.
The initial version of the enhancement makes news, blogs and comments readily accessible to readers. This is not an app, as I've been told a million times by our web staff. Rather it is a version of OakPark.com and RiverForest.com which will be the default setting for anyone reaching the site via a mobile device. It is easily possible for any user to choose access to the full site rather than the mobile version.
"But," said Graham Johnston, Internet and technology manager for Wednesday Journal, Inc., "we're confident that our readers are going to prefer this display for their digital devices. Our full site is packed with so much news and information that it can be awkward to navigate on a smaller screen."
The new mobile version was launched last Friday. It was developed in house over the past several months by Mike Risher, our web developer, and Johnston.
