Dr. Raymond Nadar died on Sept. 28, 2011 after a long, courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Born in Chicago to the late Bernard and Lillian (Liszewski) Nadarzynski, he was valedictorian of his graduating class at Weber High School and was studying chemistry at De Paul University in Chicago when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to medical school at George Washington University, Princeton, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he eventually got his medical degree.
During the Korean War, he was drafted as a doctor to serve on Army bases in San Antonio, Tex., and Fort Riley, Kan. When he was discharged, Dr. Nadar moved his family back to Oak Park where he lived until he died.
He became the first anesthesiologist at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where, in those days, he was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Eventually he became chief of anesthesiology until he retired in 1987.
He loved to sing, golf, travel, and attend opera and theater. Active in St. Bernardine's Parish in Forest Park, he sang in the choir after he retired until his health began to fail.
Ray Nadar was married to the late Gloria (nee Bielefeldt) for 54 years. He was the father of seven children, two of whom followed him into the medical profession: Thomas Raymond, Susan (Michael) Thompson, James (Martha), Donald (Melanie), Peggy (Kenneth) Horton, Mary Anne and the late David. He was the grandfather of Jessica McNamara (Kofi James), Cliff and Keri Nadar, Devin and Caitlin Nadar, Alexandra and Samantha Horton, and great-grandfather Vivian Margaret James.
Visitation was held on Oct. 2 at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Oct. 3 at St. Bernardine Church in Forest Park, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Memorials to St. Mary of Providence School for the Disabled, 4200 N. Austin Avenue, Chicago, IL 60634 are most appreciated.
