After hearing from Chicago Westsiders about pending "conceal and carry" legislation concerning firearms in the state assembly, state Rep. LaShawn Ford now wants to hear from Oak Parkers.

On Wednesday, Ford hosts his second public forum to gauge constituents' views on whether Illinois should allow citizens to carry guns. An earlier, heavily attended public forum took place in August in the Austin community. Constituents there were mostly in favor of citizens carrying guns.

Ford, who represents Austin, Oak Park and surrounding western suburbs, says he wants to hear from the public before making his decision. Wednesday's forum takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oak Park Village Hall, 123 Madison. For more information, call Ford's office: 773-378-5902.

Didja see what happened in Englewood this morning? A guy without a gun disarmed a guy with a gun. If he HAD a gun too, we could have had a shootout and seen what % of the bullets killed someone. So disappointing.

However you look at it. Guns still kill. After all thats why you want to have them and conceal them isnt it? To kill someone who robs you or hurts your family or the like?

The purpose of a penis is not to impregnate a woman. That viewpoint borders on the childish. The purpose of a penis is to launch sperm. Sperm can impregnate, but most do not. In fact, of all the sperm shot in the wolrd on an annual basis, I'd bet that less than 1/1000 of 1% actually impregnate a woman. (etc, etc....)

Damn. I should have bet on some gun nut quoting the discredited crank John Lott. I hate it when I leave money on the table.

@Not a Clinger True, we don't know what would have happened otherwise. What we do know is that a murderer opened fire and killed 8 people so far. My argument is that if someone there was trained and armed, that fewer would have likely been killed. Guns can also save lives when they are in the hands of responsible people.

@GUNZ KILL The sole purpose of a gun is not to kill. That viewpoint in my opinion borders on childish. The purpose of a gun is to launch a projectile. That projectile can kill, but most do not. In fact, of all the ammunition shot in the world on an annual basis, I'd bet that less than 1/1000 of 1% actually kill anything. If true (and it probably is), I'd argue that it's not doing a good job at achieving it's sole purpose as you characterize it. Again, guns are not the problem, people are.

Let's be real

That whole guns have the sole purpose of killing statement is so out of context considering the typical legal gun owner, including policemen, will not fire that gun at another person over the course of their life. Guns are legally used as deterrents wayyy more

So, Logical, the guy who shot up the beauty parlor MAY have used a bomb, etc. if he didnt have a gun. Is that your position? He MAY also have gone and yelled and screamed and then gone home...just like the seven people now dead.

Anything that has a SOLE PURPOSE of killing. Everything you mention has other functions and purposes besides killing. Cars kill people by accident mostly. People die from guns accidentally. The number of people who die from intentional use of a gun is far greater than any intentional deaths from cars.

@GUNZ KILL So are you suggesting that anything that makes it easy for a criminal to kill someone with be banned? If so, imagine a life without knives, razor blades, cars, baseball bats, any blunt objects, ropes, tape, etc. Yes, it's true that guns make it easy. However, if you were to spend 30 minutes actually researching the data, you would see that a much higher percentage of cars kill people than guns. Facts support that guns are not the problem. People are the problem.

Guns make it easy

@GUNZ KILL You are making things up. Guns are not responsible for most of the mass killings, not even close. Further, guns are convenient and easy to use, which is why they are used by criminals to commit crimes. They are also used by people to fight crime, for the same reasons. One thing that guns do not do is to commit crimes on their own, criminals do. Quit pointing your finger at the gun and start blaming criminals. I can't ever remember a murderer claiming the gun made them kill someone.

Why are guns the chosen weapon of choice in ALL of the school killings through out time? How about most mass killings? Have you ever heard the term going postal? It doesn't mean with knives or cars. Guns kill and that's why lunatic people use them to effectively carry out their mission. That's why YOU want one to protect yourself. Take away the gun in the equation and Wa la....you wont need one becasue the criminal wont have one either. Give it a chance.

Fire doesnt work to fight fire. Guns are easy, "concealable" and effective when it comes to killing one if not many quickly. No use in my book. The crime in California has everything to do with people DYING from guns everyday, every minute, every week, every month and every year! EVERYWHERE!

Logical from Oak Park

Posted: October 13th, 2011 10:51 AM

The crime in California has nothing to do with guns or gun laws. An obviously disturbed person made a choice to kill people. Had he not had a gun, he may have used a bomb, or a car, a knife, or any number of other potentially deadly devices. A counter argument to taking away guns altogether would claim that if someone in the shop was legally armed and trained, the death toll could have been much lower and could have included the criminal murderer. Wake up people, criminals kill people, not guns.

Huh?

At Drugz Kill: Were you there last night when two people said they'd been in situations and had to pull guns? In one case, the guy was being robbed by a gang leader who was recently paroled. Someone with him shot and killed the guy who was sticking them up. I suppose that he just thinks he needed a gun too.

GUNZ KILL, please see our inept Atty General Holder, and his Fast & Furious debacle. You think a gun ban is going to protect you? Really?? Let's ban guns again AND ban eating your Egg McMuffins while driving. That'll do it....

Crime rates ALL over have fallen irregardless of of bans or no bans. What say you?

"According to a September 30 FoxNews.com opinion piece by John Lott, newly released data for Chicago shows that, as in Washington, murder and gun crime rates didn't rise after the bans were eliminated--they plummeted. In fact, they have fallen much more than the national crime rate." Read the entire article: http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=7125

GUNZ KILL: "Yea...and? If guns are banned, then NOBODY can obtain them anyway! Takes guns out of the equation and you will have less to no gun crimes." Are you really that ignorant?

GUNZ KILL, I think you are the one who needs to wake up. The killings that you refer to are done by NON law abiding citizens who have obtained their weapons ILLEGALLY.

A gang member ran over two rivals on the south side last week killing them both. It has been determined this was a willful act and the legiSlature is looking to ban automobiles due to the fact they can be used as weapons
