The worst part of Oak Park

I really love living in Oak Park. Contrary to the opinions of some, it is really a wonderful community.
However, the absolutely worst part of Oak Park, by a wide margin, is the comments section of the Wednesday Journal website. The people who namelessly fight their battles and anonymously settle their scores there should truly be ashamed of themselves.
Imagine my horror to see this "feature" come to the paper version of the WJ in David Hammond's column from last week [LifeLines, Jan. 16]. Please stop that.

I'd have to go with a different list of worsts as well, #1 general disrespect for people and property, contributing to #2, far too many bad educational outcomes despite #3, being egregiously taxed, and #4 surrounded by holier than though know it all (see above) which contributes to #5 unhealthy business climate.....#48,500, online comments & pizza reviews, right after trouble finding the right shampoo.

I'm with bobo. The crime is the worst part regarding Oak Park. I think being nameless allows certain people to voice their opinions more freely without the backlash one might experience from people who would stigmatize you. If anything, the comments section is the best of Oak Park, because it allows people a more open context to converse about difficult issues... since when was open and honest discussion a bad thing?

Hey Don, try serving on a volunteer Village Commission and after working all day, spend your evening being yelled at and belittled by fellow residents because they want a cul-de-sac. There's plenty of the worst that extends beyond this paper.

The "absolutely worst part" of this community is a comment section on the website of one of the newspapers? Seems like it would be easier just not to read it than to read it and complain about it.

I feel your pain, Don. But it's not like these internal OP bitter debates go away if there were no comments section. In fact, it may be better that we all have it out, anonymous and in public. It's just a symptom of our divided community. I'm more worried about OP itself than the comments section.

You know that no one will force you to read the post article comments. It's your choice. No one has forced you to write your opinion on the subject. But, you obviously felt a need to share. I think that is what the comment section is all about, to share your thoughts, feelings and opinions, good or bad. I think it is a good learning experience.
