Hilda Whalen, 94, retired executive secretary

Hilda S. Whalen, nee Spangle, 94, a resident of Holley Court Terrace in Oak Park, formerly of Des Plaines, died at her residence on Jan. 3, 2014. Born on Nov. 8, 1919 in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Lloyd and Theda Spangle, she graduated from Rock Island High School and married Paul V. Whalen in 1942. They lived in the Quad Cities area of Iowa and in Marengo, Ill., until moving to Des Plaines where they raised their family. 

She cherished her new friends at Holley Court and took great joy watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in musical, dramatic and sporting events. She also loved cooking and reading with them. Until her retirement in 1984, she was an executive secretary for the National Association of Independent Insurers.  

Hilda Whalen is survived by her children, Kathleen (Dennis) Lawson and James (Carolyn Kalina) Whalen; her grandchildren, Cathleen (Gregory) Anderson, Constance (Robert) McCain, Lucas and Paul Whalen; and her great-grandchildren, Forrest and Molly Anderson and Erin and Kalen McCain. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her grandson, Patrick Lawson; and her sister, Florence Spangley.  

Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. Mass at St. Luke Church, 528 Lathrop Ave. in River Forest, followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the nonprofit Vitas Community Connection, c/o Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 580 Waters Edge, Lombard, IL 60148, attention: special end-of-life patient care programs.

Arrangements were handled by Drechsler, Brown and Williams Funeral Home in Oak Park.
