River Forest schools pass on taxes

Now comes word that River Forest's public elementary schools, District 90, recently passed its tax levy for the new year. Not only did the school board choose not to grab the 3 percent tax hike allowed under the state's tax cap law, they actually reduced the levy for the year.

This was done, we are told, because the school district felt it had enough money coming in and enough in reserve. Compare and contrast that with the actions of the school board at OPRF.

@want to Stay in OP, why should D200 be any different that P. Obama. Lets take money cause we can...that is the motto at the Federal level, state level, and now right here in OP.

Kudos to D90 for being logical and respecting the taxpayers. They didn't increase the levy, because they believe they have adequate funds. Perhaps the D200 board ought to try and wrap their heads around this concept. You don't have to take money just because you can.

The two districts are like apples and oranges. Would be great to say they should and can do the same. D200 is Far more complex than D90. It is great what D90 did, and clearly D200 has to be looking at that. But continue to focus on this, but realize they are different organizations and have different pressures. Teacher benifits MUST however be shifted to the teachers. This will help reduce the burden to taxpayers.
