The Fenwick High School boys swimming team closed out 2017 with a home meet called the Three Wise Men Invite against Marmion and Rockford Boylan. The Friars split their pair of duals, beating Boylan 109-61 but losing to Marmion 112-58. Marmion also defeated Boylan 119-51.
"This is a relaxing meet between Boylan, Marmion and Fenwick. It's a fun way to bust our way into the new year," Fenwick coach Luke McGuire said. "We swim everyone on one level and enjoy pizza after the meet. It was a good break from Christmas training."
Despite dealing with illness and deaths in the family among team members, Fenwick swam well.
Connor McCarthy placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.25 seconds) and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 10.35 seconds). Dan Lynch took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.41) and third in the 50-yard freestyle (23.14). Payton Comstock finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 1:57.09 and he also earned fifth in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 5:25.12.
In other notable races, the Friars' Alex Figus came in third at 52.66 in the 100-yard freestyle. Fenwick swimmers Pete Buinauskas (1:01.29) and Jamie Heneghan (101.53) earned second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.
In the relay races, the quartet of Lynch, Dan Bajda, Figus and Heneghan finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:32.37). Fenwick also took second in the 400-yard relay as Comstock, Heneghan, Ben Katzbeck and McCarthy collaborated to post a time of 3:30.96.
The Friars continued their fine form into 2018 with a ninth-place finish (out of 23 teams mostly from Wisconsin) at the 24th Annual Marquette Invitational.
Fenwick, Byron Co-op and Rockford Boylan represented Illinois. Madison West (Wis.) won the invite with a score of 358.5.
"Coming off two weeks of hard training, we had some good swims," McGuire said. "The boys were right on their season-best times."
In individual events, Liam Hutchinson came in fifth in the 200 free at 1:44.42 and fourth in the 500 free at 4:42.99. Tommy Bartecki touched the wall at 57.03 for 12th place in the 100 back. Lynch was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.14.
The relays also fared well with a pair of eighth-place showings. The 200-yard medley relay of Lynch, Bajda, McCarthy and Hutchinson recorded a time of 1:42.36. In the final race of the day, the 400 free quartet of Hutchinson, McCarthy, Bartecki and Bajda posted a time of 3:22.81.
The Friars are back in the pool on Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13 to compete in both diving and swimming at the Sandburg Invite.
