The Trinity and Fenwick girls basketball teams haven’t played each other since 2007, but in the opening round of the Class 4A Lyons Township Sectional on Tuesday night the rivalry returned in a flash.

The Blazers (27-1) came away with a 64-45 victory and will take on Whitney Young in the sectional championship on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Friars (22-10) jumped out to an early five-point lead in the first quarter, but a 6-0 spurt capped off by a basket from Trinity junior guard Mikayla Leyden put the Blazers up for good.

The Friars, who have now made it to sectionals for 18 straight years, kept the game close in the first half. Head coach Dave Power was pleased with the first half efforts.

“I really liked our first half tempo,” he said following the loss. “We had the game going to our pace, but (Trinity) had a couple of bust-outs late in each quarter that really helped them.”

The Blazers came out strong right away in the second half as senior guard/forward Megan Podkowa and junior guard Taylor Nazon led the way for an 8-2 run to set the tone in the third. The Blazers would stay consistent and maintain their comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. Fenwick senior center Meredith Boardman scored the last basket with 2:12 left to play, and the Blazers rode out the clock to keep the 19-point lead as the final score. The Depaul-bound Podkowa said her team was clicking, and that it was key to the victory.

“We’re all falling into place,” she said. “We all bond really well together, so I think it’s all just coming together.”

Podkowa finished the night with a team-high 20 points, while Nazon tallied 16. For the Friars, the Yale-bound Boardman led the team with 15 points. Sophomore guard Jade Owens added 14 points for Fenwick.

As Trinity prepares to take on the only team that handed them a loss this season in Whitney Young, Podkowa said it will be their biggest challenge yet.

“We know it’s going to be a really tough game,” she said. “We’ve just got to focus on handling their press; that’s a big part of their game. We’re going to have a lot of work to do tomorrow.”

Someones lying and I will assume that those who hid behind fake names don't know what really happened the game. As an OPRF alum, none of Fenwick's unsportsmanslike behavior surprises. I remember when the contest was heading OPRF's way the Fenwick elitists would start berating us by impling we were not at Fenwick because our Dad's had no money.

I too attended this game. A Trinity player who scored 13 point with 3 3 pointers had transfered from Fenwick. Every time this player has the ball the Fenwick student section would scream. "You s__k" or "traitor". (classy) I personally feel this is vulgar and not keeping with Fenwick's Christian values. Trinty had an exceptional season with a 30-2 record. In closing, let us move on, and wish the players and coaches of both teams well.

I was at the game and didn't see or hear anything inappropriate. Fenwick had a staff member standing in the student section the entire game. There may be isolated examples of bad behavior, but certainly nothing that should be used to tar the entire student section. The complaining about Fenwick is overblown. It was a great game with great turnout from both schools.

I failed to see the fenwick student section do anything as disrespectful as the trinity student doing cartwheels on the court during the fenwick cheerleaders' halftime routine.

I'm not reading any examples of fenwick's "disgraceful" behavior.

I'm not shocked to hear how the student acted at the game. My daughter competed againt Fenwick for 4 years The Fenwich cheering section was disgraceful. It's not just the visitors that feel this way. I was talking with a parent of one of my daughters teammates and she was saying how rude disgusting the students and parents of Fenwick acted. I thought it was just sour grapes until one of the Fenwick swimmers said hello to her. It turned out her son swam for Fenwick. She knew the culture inside.

Not only was the Fenwick student behavior disgraceful, there were moments when it was actually frightening.

Fenwick's student behavior was appalling - degrading, rude comments and behavior. I was more amazed that there were Fenwick teachers, administrators and coaches who did nothing! Are you teaching any values at that school?

Attn: Fenwick students, your behavior on Tuesday was not worthy of your team or your great coaches. Your school is well represented and the rivalry is a good natured one. You took it too far. your language used against one Trinity player in particular was outrageous! Those kids on your team deserve better. They are good kids and parents and should not be represented by that behavior! I'm a Trinity parent and I could'nt be more disgusted! Dave and Team deserve better!

Attn: Fenwick Student Cheering Section. -Cheer for your team, not against the opponents. -Don't get personal in your comments about players, coaches or officials. -No profanity, vulgarity or sexist comments. Your collective moronic behavior was a disgrace to Fenwick High School and it's proud tradition.
