School's out for Oak Park students on Election Day in November

The grownups in Oak Park may be visiting District 97 schools to cast their votes come Election Day this November. But they won't find any children in attendance.
Citing security concerns about blending school and busy voting stations, the Oak Park elementary school board decided at its meeting on Feb. 14, to give students Election Day off. The action was part of the board's overall approval of the school year calendar for the next school year. This is the first time in recent memory that Oak Park public elementary students will not be in class on an Election Day. District administration cited safety concerns in and around the building for keeping kids out of class. All 10 D97 school buildings are polling places — a courtesy offered by the district and not required by law.
The board adopted the 2012-2013 calendar in a 6-0 vote, with Peter Barber abstaining. He gave no reason for his abstention when the board voted last Tuesday. But when the board first discussed the calendar at its meeting three weeks ago, Barber, who's also the board's president, was insistent that kids be in school on Election Day. Among his reasons were that it was a learning experience for kids to see and experience the election process first-hand.
The buildings won't be entirely closed in the district on Election Day. Teachers will have an Institute Day on Nov. 6 — students don't have classes on those days. Administration opted to move that day from Nov. 21, the day before Thanksgiving, to Nov. 6.

@Teacher's Wife - couldn't say it any better. Question: do any other school districts close on this day? I know that not all schools are polling places, but a lot are. Why no mention of how other districts handle this? I'd be surprised if they close, but I simply don't know.

I am so relaxed I almost fell asleep reading your post. So let's start at the end, how is election day any different, say from school musical or any other school event when people freely walk the halls of our schools completely unchecked? Do you know everyone, most I am sure but not all, who attends these events? Shut em' down,or must show ID, I say! Only Oak Parker vote in Oak Park. Lucky to have a day off before thanksgiving, or I take it as a planned vacation day? You don't know which do you?

@Hi-You need to relax. Most of the country works on the day before Thanksgiving and makes it work out. You are exceptionally lucky if you have that day off already. There are all sorts of non-class days we don't have off from work, like Pulaski Day, or various institute days, and surely you manage with those. How is election day any different?

@Kris, if you are on contract for that day, then you should be at school. If you are not on contract and you are there, it is your choice and your "choice" should not impact the entire d97 student and family population. This is the whim of an overbearing outsider, al roberts, who is the same person who is taking your pay freeze, and if you live in OP tax increase, and buying software that does not work, building a new admin building and what else that we don't know about?

I don't agree with this decision. I have two D97 kids whom I believe have benefited from the energy, exposure, and eductional opportunities afforded to them by being in a learning environment on election day. Security concerns? I don't recall anything happening in the past, and if it did, it wasn't publicized. This is a mistake on the board's part. I am very disappointed in this decision. I will also face un-needed child care challenges on that day. Not a good call in my opinion!

@ Hi, no you should not call your kid in on that day. I am a teacher and we travel as well. I'm at school every year the day before thanksgiving and we make it work, why can't you?

Should I call my kid in now for Nov 21 2012? you see, we won't be in town, as we travel for Thanksgiving. And the child care fee for election day? To whom do I send that bill, as I will still have to work that day.
