Before the Fenwick girls basketball team took on area-rival Trinity on Tuesday night (after print deadline) in the Class 4A semifinal of the Lyons Sectional, the Friars slipped past St. Ignatius 70-69 to win their 17th-straight regional championship.

Fenwick's Meredith Boardman hit the game winner at the buzzer to give the Friars the victory last week.

Boardman led the Friars with 17 points, 10 of which came in the crucial fourth quarter. Fenwick trailed by nine at one point in the final period.

Sophomore Jade Owens scored 15 points for the Friars, while Marek Burchett added 14.

The win pushed Fenwick's overall record to 22-9.

The last time the Friars played Trinity — in 2007 — they edged the Blazers 51-50.
