Two grapplers from different high schools in Oak Park added to their collection of individual state wrestling title trophies by winning their respective weight classes at the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Meet held at Assembly Hall in Champaign on Saturday.
OPRF's Sam Brooks and Fenwick's Matt Garelli both took home their second state titles to cap off their impressive high school wrestling careers. Brooks, who won an individual title his sophomore year and finished runner-up last season, defeated Taylor McGiffen of Alton by a 9-2 decision to win the Class 3A state title at 182 pounds. The Iowa-bound Brooks, who fought through injuries this season, was a bronze medalist in the FILA Cadet World Championships in Hungary over the summer.
Garelli secured back-to-back state titles by battling KeVon Powell to a 2-1 decision in double overtime for the Class 2A title at 120 pounds. Last season Garelli became Fenwick's first ever state wrestling champ at 103 pounds. He went undefeated this season, earning 23-straight victories. Last August, the senior defended his USA Wrestling Freestyle National Championship title in Fargo, N.D.
Brooks wasn't the only OPRF wrestler to find success at the Class 3A State Meet as the Huskies had a total of four grapplers place in the top three at the tournament. Freshmen Matt Rundell and Larry Early proved OPRF won't be losing any steam with the graduation of Brooks. Rundell finished second at 106 pounds, losing to Kris Williams of Thornton 4-3. With 44 victories this season, Rundell has the most wins for a freshman in the program's history. Early, also a freshman and a 40-match winner this season, defeated Plainfield Central's Nick Nasenbeny 2-0 to win third place at 120 pounds.
At 152 pounds, OPRF sophomore Devonte Mahomes finished third by defeating Tom Gerszewski of Crystal Lake South 10-4.
On Tuesday, the Huskies rolled Hinsdale Central 47-19 in the Class 3A Dual Team Sectional in Oak Park. They now advance to the state quarterfinals to take on Machesney Park Harlem on Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. OPRF won the school's first dual team state title during the 2008-09 season.

Unfortunately...#1, trust me, the WJ has always favored OPRF in total sports coverage. #2, Fenwick HS is a CIVIC ASSET for Oak Park. The very presence of one of the country's best HS's is good for all. # 3, it's wrestling, so in the grand scheme of things it's even less important than soccer. Congrats to the winners...fine effort, we're proud of you, etc., but it's still wrestling...where little football players go in winter to stay in shape. Now ditch those funny leotards and get your pads on!

@Mom. I'm well aware of the "residency" issue. It has been an true at OPRF for decades - at least beginning in the 60's when Austin High went thru racial changes. OPRF should use annual proof of residency. About 10 years ago they FINALLY began to require that ALL students provide proof - prior to this if you were a grad of any public school in OP or RF...no questions asked. @ Couple Things - my only issue is EQUAL coverage of both schools for sports. Congrats to Garelli, but he's NOT "a local"

@ OPRF #1- Chris Dardanes also won state title at OPRF not just Nick... Other interesting note about OPRF Wrestling's propensity for recruiting... everyone knows the Dardanes' left Fenwick for OPRF but did they move??? If you read their bios on the Minnesota Gophers website (where they both wrestle now) it lists OPRF as their high school but Chicago as their hometown???

2.They are both in OP so who cares... the paper covers "area" news it does not belong to any school, etc. 3. Garelli resides in Elmhurst

1. If you were in the "know" about the wrestling team you would find that about 5 of the current OPRF stud wrestlers are "imports." They may pay somebody rent and get a lease to establish some form of residency in OP but they are actually residing ("laying their head down at night") in their true hometowns... Not OP or RF! More like Schaumburg area, Plainfield area, and Southside of Chicago. Continued...

@Unfortunately. Are you sure all of OPRF students are residents of Oak Park or River Forest? My son, an OPRF student, certainly spent most of his time east of Austin in homes where kids claimed to be OPRF students.

@Parent. Agree. I believe that Fenwick sends a lot of "press releases" about their students (athletic and academic) to places like Hinsdale and many other suburbs where they have a large group of "Fenwick Dads" now living and sending their sons and daughters to their alma mater. I KNOW that Fenwick is a great school - I just don't know why it's on par with OPRF in the sports section of the Wed Journal?!?

I hope the local papers of these non op athletes give some pub to their local kids. Its always nice to see articles about athletic achievements of yourself or someone you know or some one your related too. I'm sure Fenwick wouldn't mind the pub as well. There's nothing better than free recruiting by publishing state champions and where they attend.

@Southside. The last figure I saw had less OP kids at Fenwick than RF kids. And someone once told me that OP kids at Fenwick were now no more than 10 percent and perhaps less. I "get" that they are located in OP, but it's kind of hard, for me, to equate that with OPRF - which has 4x the enrollment and 100% of the kids living here, but equal sports coverage in WJ. IMO, Fenwick is a regional school in most every area - with minimal OP impact (except for parking issues - :-)!).

Nick and Chris Dardanes both left Fenwick to come to OPRF and Nick won a state title while at OPRF.

@Unfortunately. You are correct, Barnishel won state at 152 lbs in 2009. As to your second question, Fenwick is in Oak Park which is why they are given equal press by an Oak Park paper. Where Garelli is from is not important, as he is wrestling for Fenwick (an Oak Park school). BTW, are you sure the vast majority of Fenwick students do not live in Oak Park?

Couple of thoughts - didn't one of the Barnhisel boys (from RF) win a state championship at Fenwick recently? If true, then Garelli would not be, as noted "Fenwick's first ever state wrestling champ." Secondly, why does an Oak Park paper give equal coverage to Fenwick and OPRF? It is probable that Matt Garelli does not even live in OP or RF - like the vast majority of Fenwick students. Whereas EVERY member of the OPRF wrestling team lives in either OP or RF.
