The play of the Fenwick boys basketball team on Friday night against Loyola was in stark contrast from how the Friars performed when the two teams met back in December.
Fenwick avenged an earlier loss to the Ramblers by tallying season-highs in points, assists and free throws on its way to a 78-52 victory in Oak Park.
The last time the two teams met it was turnovers that plagued the Friars (8-12, 3-6 Catholic League), including three straight to close out the game in the final minute. But there were no miscues this time around. Fenwick made 21-of-22 free throws, dished out 22 assists and held Loyola's best player, Charlie Morrissey, to zero points from the field.
Sam Ainsworth's 19 points and nine rebounds led the Friars, who have put together three-straight victories, including a 58-49 win over Uplift on Saturday at the Conference Challenge Shootout at Northside Prep.
Tom Planek and Luke Lattner each added 10 points apiece in the win over the Ramblers (9-15, 4-5). Eleven players scored for Fenwick in that game. Keshaun Smith finished with seven points and five assists.
"I'd say it's our best game we played on the season," said Fenwick head coach John Quinn. "We played excellent throughout. We are 3-1 on the month now, so we're looking at it like it's a new season."
Against Uplift, Ainsworth led with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Sophomore Dan Dwyer had three blocks and six rebounds.
The Friars, who kicked off their mini win-streak with a 64-39 victory over Holy Trinity on Feb. 4, close out the regular season on the road with games at Gordon Tech Friday, Nazareth on Saturday and Brother Rice on Feb. 24.
