Crime-cam sends the wrong message on Roosevelt Road
Tuesday, January 31st, 2012 10:00 PM
Driving home from work on Roosevelt Road the other night, I saw a strange sight. Red and blue police lights ahead in the distance, but they seemed to be far higher than the traffic ahead of me. Once I got near the Jewel Roosevelt Market, I saw that the Berwyn police had installed a "crime camera" near the Culver's parking lot.
I thought the idea of the Roosevelt corridor improvement was to spruce things up and attract business. Perhaps the Berwyn P.D. thinks that the eternally flashing squad-car-like lights will reassure citizens that they are safe under the department's watchful eye. They could not be more wrong. Nothing announces to people, "This is a crappy, crime-ridden neighborhood. Please avoid it, just keep driving," quite like one of these surveillance devices. One friend referred to it as the "Ghetto-Cam."
In recent months, I have seen Berwyn cops walking a beat down the Roosevelt corridor. I welcome that. I believe such actions put a great face on the department. The presence of a crime-cam sends a very different message. Both are law enforcement tools, but the Berwyn P.D. needs to realize that perception is everything.
A pair of cops walking a beat tells citizens and customers, "We're here, we care, we want to be part of the neighborhood." A crime-cam tells folks, "We've given up. You're on your own. If something bad happens to you, we'll have a video — maybe."
Mostly it says, "Something bad is going to happen to you." A camera on a lamppost completely erodes confidence in a police department and in a municipality. If Berwyn officials want to look like they're hunkering down in a bunker, cowering in fear, this is the perfect way to do it.
Law enforcement video surveillance in itself is an argument for another day. The flashing lights drawing attention to this box is unsettling for those living here, bad for property values and a death blow to business.
Please shut off the red and blue lights.

The lights are not for the criminals. Criminals already know where the video cameras are. The lights are for people to know that the Police are watching the area. If video cameras were the real solution, to moving criminals to another location, then there would be a video camera on every corner.

After going to this Jewel for years at night time, I was never aware this was a bad area in need of a Big Brother Camera. This also right by that OP street that has all the crazy Halloween decorations in October. Maybe somebody should tell the kids next year they should be scared of more than ghosts and goblins.

Can I get one of those cameras in front of my house? How about in back by the garage?

To Former Oak Parker: Ordinarily I would write a letter, have my say, that would be it. But you asked valid questions. "Based on what data?" The answer is none. If you look back on my letter you will see that I said, 'perception is everything.' This is a matter of advertising. No more, no less. As I stated in my letter, beat cops are a great thing. I fear,FOP, that you think I'm some sort of cop-basher.A lot of my family is in law enforcement. I'd never sell short a patrol officer.

Please keep the cameras, just get rid of the lights. Thank You.

The lights are frequently are equipped with cameras so the police can monitor what is going on. I don't know if Berwyn has cameras but it is a possibility.

Former Oak Parker, the lights no only make the place feel like a bad area (not good for a hood), but also like you said, warn criminals not to commit crime... which actually is negative, because not only do criminals (which would commit the crime anyway) know clearly where the cams are, they can plan their crimes around them with an added sense of safety. They now know to not deal on that corner, but to walk a block away. This is counter productive. At least get rid of the lights!

Cameras say "something bad is going to happen to you?" Says who? Based on what data? The data I've seen shows that trouble makers avoid being spotted on street cameras. I think you're confusing your rather unconsidered opinion with considered facts, Mr. Ewald. What that camera says to me is Berwyn is serious about crime suppression.

We live too close to Chicago to be using flashing lights as a warning (of what?) in the neighborhood. The BPD might see another purpose, but the fact is that anyone who drives through Chicago knows that flashing lights at the top of a lamppost means drug sales or violence. The light screams, "Stay Away). If there is a need to highlight a block or neighborhood, a more subtle approach would have better all-around results.
