Catherine De Orio is the new host of "Check, Please!" –  frequently the highest-rated program on PBS and the brainchild of David Manilow.

De Orio was selected by Manilow from a field of 900 entrants (including me -- ouch!), and I believe she will be a powerful new face and voice for the program. She's a former attorney, so her judicious mindset and verbal skills will suit her well to moderate a panel of citizen critics. She's also, as Manilow describes her, nice.

Last month, DeOrio and I met up at Johnnie's Beef, the legendary Italian beef stand in Elmwood Park, to talk about the show and Italian beef. De Orio grew up down the street from Johnnie's, so it's been a part of her life since she was little.

Getting in line at Johnnie's, we ran into De Orio's dad, local surgeon-now-retired Tony DeOrio, a great guy and fellow paisano. He joined us for lunch.

Digital editor and videographer Ashley Lisenby was there, but being vegetarian, she was shooting not eating.
