You Really Should Eat This, Falafel at Jerusalem Cafe

Probably the biggest lunchtime meal bargain in Oak Park

I've written about Jerusalem Café since I first started writing this dining blog almost three years ago.

Since then, I've mentioned Jerusalem Café within the context of some excellent Egyptian falafel I'd tried, and although I do enjoy the snazzier Falafill across the street from Jerusalem Café, the falafel at the latter place is more old school and the buffet is, as I've said many times before, probably the biggest lunchtime meal bargain in Oak Park.

Joe Kreml and Patrick Rollins with the Village of Oak Park and I have made several You Really Should Eat This videos, and we've been honored to have our videos considered as finalists in the National Government TV Competition (winners to-be-announced this month) and to have earned a screening at the Food Film Festival, an international event with screenings in New York, Charleston, Copenhagen and Chicago.

This month, and for the special Wednesday Journal food issue, we did a segment of "You Really Should Eat This" at Jerusalem Café. It was just a matter of time.

Falafel may be called something else in many parts of Egypt, Pam, but if you check around 25 seconds into this video, you'll see a sign that I photographed in Luxor that reads "Flafel."

You had an article on Egyptian "falafel", which I enjoyed since I have been to Egypt a number of times and love this dish. But I wanted to make one correction. It's not called Falafel in Egypt, but Tamiya. I'm glad you pointed out how it's made with fava beans, as that's an interesting difference. Enjoy your articles!

I like Falafill too, Julie, but some of the celebrity chef sandwiches may be a little too adventurous for picky eaters, like Holly's son. Adam, I'm humbled by your comments.

Another great segment guys. I love Jerusalem Café falafel. (My kids like their little hamburgers.) I also enjoy Mr. Hammond's hat, which reminds me of Mr. White's hat in 'Breaking Bad.' Which brings me full circle, because my two favorite series on the air are 'Breaking Bad,' and 'You Really Should Eat This.'

Jerusalen Cafe and Falafill are both awesome. I'd never really tried Middle Eastern food until Jerusalem Cafe moved into OP, and I'm hooked. With two great options now, I think I'm spoiled.
