House Red, a wine store in Forest Park, has always impressed me with its tight, focused collection of wines, ranging in price but always thoughtfully selected.
Recently, House Red added a wine bar and lounge to the retail store.
All House Red wines on the wine bar menu are certified organic and biodynamically farmed. Biodynamic grape farming is a fascinating approach to horticulture. A few years ago, I produced a segment on this vinicultural strategy for WBEZ. You can listen to it here.
The food served with the wine is relatively simple: cheese platters, assorted olives, bruschetta, sausages…and that simplicity is just fine with me. When I’m drinking a good wine, I frequently prefer simple pairings that permit the flavors of the wine to come forward without a lot of “interference” (no matter how tasty) from the food.
At the wine bar, House Red will also serve croquettes from Taste of Brazil and s’mores from Salted Caramel Chicago, a very fine local provider of these traditional confections.
The kitchen is open 5-9:30 Tuesday – Saturday, and 2-7:30 on Sunday.
