Ethnic Diversity in Oak Park Dining

Not surprisingly, our diverse community has a lot of ethnic dining

Suburbs have a reputation for being white bread bland, but as I looked over a list I’d made of local ethnic restaurants in Oak Park, I was actually encouraged by the diversity I’d discovered.

Maybe that should come as no surprise to a community that prides itself on diversity.

I’ve posted about all the following places before, and these are all restaurants I like, so I thought it might be helpful to consolidate a listing of some worthy local ethnic restaurants to help  those in the mood for adventure dining to check out Venezuelan, Vietnamese, or some other cuisine not yet experienced.

THAI, Yum Thai

JEWISH DELI-STYLE, Onion Roll

BRAZILIAN, Taste of Brazil

PAN-ASIAN, Hutong Fresh Asian Café

ITALIAN, Jimmy’s Place

MEDITERRANEAN, Autre Monde

VIETNAMESE, Saigon Pho

VENEZUELAN: Aripo’s

JAPANESE, Sen Sushi

CHINESE, Luo’s Peking House

MIDDLE EASTERN, Jerusalem Café

MEXICAN, Maya del Sol

SPANISH, La Espanola

GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, Restaurant y Pupuseria Guanachapin

GREEK, Papaspiros

BOHEMIAN, Klas

Regarding restaurants in Berwyn, etc., it would have been better if I'd indicated these as being restaurants in the Oak Park "area," which all of these places certainly are. With any list like this, some places are going to be left out -- no way around that.

A best-of column? Someone's got spring fever! :) While you've got the johnny-come-latelies for Middle Eastern and Mediterranean, it's a grave oversight to leave out our venerable old-timer: Grapes Leaves on Oak Park Ave.

Although Autre Monde is Berwyn, not Oak Park, it's a great list. Delicious variety.

LOVE this list - thanks for putting it together, David. I'm hoping that you can add to the list as time goes on.

That's why we love to eat in Oak Park. I would love to see some of that diversity expand to the Austin area and support bridging the economical gap. Love the food fair of Oak Park. Great info. Thank you!

Not to forget one of my favorite cuisines: Indian, represented by Klay Oven.
