Developing a racial consciousness among all school staff is among the goals outlined in Oak Park and River Forest High School's ambitious strategic plan. The plan is still in draft form, but the District 200 Board of Education, which governs OPRF, is expected to approve a final plan in the next few weeks.
A school playground has never been more welcome than at Oak Park's Ascension School. On Saturday, July 20, volunteers were out at Ascension, 601 Van Buren St., to put together the new playground for preschoolers. The would-be craftsmen, and women, worked from the early morning till around noon.
Oak Park Elementary School District 97 is showing a surplus for the 2012-13 budget year, according to preliminary numbers released by the district. The district actually spent $3.3 million dollars, or 4.6 percent, less than was budgeted, said Therese O'Neill, D97's assistant superintendent for finance and operations.
Oak Park District 97 is considering installing outdoor security cameras at its eight elementary schools. In all, 79 cameras costing roughly $79,000 would be installed at the schools, with some buildings using more than others.
June 30 was Cheryl Witham's last day as assistant superintendent for finance and operations at Oak Park and River Forest High School. She will now assume the same role at New Trier Township High School. Before leaving OPRF, Wednesday Journal interviewed Witham about her tenure at the high school.
Administrators at Oak Park and River Forest High School received salary increases this week after the District 200 Board of Education approved the hikes. The increases ranged from 2.5 percent for some to as high as 9 percent for others. The increases took effect on Monday, which is the start of fiscal year 2014.
The lure of adding nearly a million dollars to their school budgets was enough to convince districts 97 and 200 to agree to amend the Downtown TIF settlement. The two school boards last week approved amending the TIF at the request of Oak Park village government.
Oak Park and River Forest High School has hired John Carlson as its interim director of human resources for the 2013-2014 school year. Carlson has been an administrator at Elgin High School, Niles North High School and Niles Township High School.
