Nick Willis (3:52) and Jenny Simpson (4:19) recently took top honors in the Fifth Avenue Mile race in New York City. Our running columnist Paul Oppenheim saw them run last April at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Both runners left quite an impression.
Too much running too soon can have pitfalls like injuries. When he started running, Paul Oppenheim was content with daily four mile runs, a modest mileage which allowed him to run an occasional 10K. He didn't incur a significant running-related injury for 25 years.
