We all know what to do, and many of us resolve to do it every year: eat better, exercise more, lose weight and reduce stress. We may have many demands on our time and energy, and not a lot of cash to spare for health clubs and organic produce. It seems insurmountable, so we throw up our hands and eat a bag of chips. Changing our diets and habits is not easy, but with a little guidance and a lot of patience, it can be enjoyable. Really!
I'm not a medical professional, personal trainer or registered dietician. What I am is a former couch potato and junk food fan who is on a journey to prevent illness, reduce stress, and increase my energy and vitality through nutrition and exercise. I have watched members of my family suffer from preventable illness and seen their diminished quality of life, and I aim to find a better way. I am currently a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified holistic health counselor, and will gladly share what I am learning with you. The website for my health coaching practice is www.healthwithinsight.com.
I'm a big believer in baby steps! My goal is to show Oak Parkers that there are plenty of ways we can improve our health, and though some of them have price tags, a lot of them don't. On "Menu Monday" I'll discuss an inexpensive, healthy, seasonal food and perhaps share a recipe. "Wellness Wednesdays" will look at one of the practicioners of healing arts in our area, who will teach us about Reiki, Reflexology, Rolfing, etc. Finally "Fitness Friday" will introduce you to a new way to think about exercise, either by enjoying movement outdoors or demystifying some of the exercise classes available through the Park District or local fitness centers.
I look forward to hearing your ideas, and learning about all the many health and wellness options the Oak Park area has to offer.

If your kids think all restaurant meals must be battered and fried to be fun, then it could be worthwhile to open their eyes to other possibilities. One Oak Park restaurant is trying out some healthy kids’ meals for one special week.

I recently broke down and got an iPhone. It's pretty cool, and I'm sure it will be useful in my personal and business life. But I'm going to resist pulling it out at every opportunity in order to guard some quiet, un-stimulated moments for my brain to rest and just be.
Healthy, Tasty and Kids Love it

I make charoset for our Seder every year: a delicious concoction of chopped apples, walnuts, sweet wine, cinnamon and honey. Its ceremonial significance is that it resembles the mortar that the Hebrew slaves used while building for the Egyptian Pharoh. Though it’s not much to look at, it tastes delicious and it’s really healthy, too.

There are people who are full-time vegetarians, and then there are the rest of us. Some people need some animal protein in their diet, and others just prefer to have it. But even the most committed carnivores can abstain from eating meat once a week, and find benefits for their health, their budget, and their carbon footprint.

Most of the time March finds us buried in snow and not even thinking about things like farmers markets and fresh sweet corn. This year, Mother Nature gave us a heads up: summer is coming, and if you want to spend it eating fresh local produce, then joining then a CSA is the way to go – and now is the time to do it.

The food controversy du jour is "pink slime," an unsavory name for an unsavory mixture of beef trimmings and ammonia that proponents say reduces waste and opponents insist is unsafe. Have you and your kids been eating it? And is it bad for you?

How about this gorgeous spring weather? The warm sunshine coaxes us off our couches just as it coaxes the daffodils out of the ground. If your first spring run, bike ride or golf game has left you with some sore muscles, a sports massage may be just what you need.

Companies are starting to realize that a little money spent on workplace wellness and prevention will save them big bucks on health care costs while increasing productivity. Happy, healthy employees are simply more effective than sick and stressed out ones!

Breathing feeds the body every bit as much as water or food does! And you don't need to set aside 20 minutes of silent meditation to harness the power of breathing to reduce stress and help your organs function better.
