Jefferson's Bethke's rap poem video, Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus, had 10 million hits in the 4 days after he posted it on youtube on Jan. 10. Before commenting on it, I thought I should simply post the lyrics so you can read what has become a "phenomenon."
I had an interesting experience two days ago. I'm in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. It was Sunday, and I wanted to worship in a Christian church, so I went on the worldwide web and found a church just a mile from where I was staying.
Ken Trainor's column in last Wednesday's issue of the Wednesday Journal which was critical of my blog in which I said thatI couldn't attend the Community Thanksgiving Service gave me a chance to struggle with why I couldn't participate. This posting is part of an ongoing conversation Ken and I have about religion and faith.
The Occupy Chicago protestors emphasize justice for all while the religious right focus on liberty for all. Ideally, the two should be held in a creative, dialectical tension. The reason I sympathize with the Occupy Chicago people is because right now I think our society leans too far away from justice and too far towards freedom.
